America's Civic Mass Media
Across America, local news is disappearing.
Thousands of communities now live in media deserts, where few reporters remain to cover the decisions, issues, and stories that shape everyday life.
When local journalism fades, communities lose transparency, civic awareness, and connection to one another.
The Local Newsroom Initiative at PIQSTAR is designed to help rebuild that connection.
Through this initiative, journalists, displaced reporters, students, and community storytellers can contribute hyperlocal reporting directly to connected television, mobile devices, and the web through the PIQSTAR platform.
Participants cover the stories that matter most city council meetings, school board decisions, public safety updates, local businesses, and community events.
For displaced journalists, the initiative restores a lane to continue reporting.
For students, it offers real-world experience in community journalism.
And for residents who care about their neighborhoods, it provides a way to highlight local issues and bring people together through shared information.
PIQSTAR is crafting these newsrooms to help establish community-owned media, ensuring that local stories remain visible, accessible, and told by the people who live them.
